REVITALISING DERBY MARKET PLACE: SITE CONTEXT

  • The Market Place sits at the heart of the City Centre. Several cultural and leisure attractions are located to the south of Market Place, including the Guildhall, Market Hall, The Quad and Vaillant Live to the West.
  • The site is in close proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Grade I listed Derby Cathedral to the north and Derwent River to the east.
  • These heritage and environmental sensitivities have been carefully considered throughout the design process.

PLANNING POLICY CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES FOR THIS PART OF THE CITY

  • The adopted Derby City Local Plan Part 1 – Core Strategy (2017) sets out that within the “Cathedral Quarter,” priority will be given to various opportunities including the redevelopment of the Assembly Rooms which will support the area’s economic activity.
