OUR PROPOSAL

The emerging masterplan brings together a range of complementary uses and spaces to create a vibrant new area of the city centre. These include:

  • DerbyMADE – a flexible community, commercial, leisure and cultural building
  • DerbyWORKS – new, modern, office accommodation
  • DerbyHOTEL – high quality, full service 4 star hotel
  • Market Place – revitalised public realm and landscaping, with opportunities for social interaction, green space, play and a flexible event space

DerbyMADE:

Having listened to feedback from the public and stakeholders from previous consultation, the latest plans for DerbyMADE could include the potential for the following uses:

  • A public space for meeting studying or working with its own coffee shop, bar and café
  • A small music venue – This will have a capacity of no more than 400 people for a music event and as such is designed to complement other venues in the city centre. This part of the building will comprise a flexible double height space that can be used for spoken word, film, events, product launches, small conferences and exhibitions.
  • Cultural / exhibition space –This is flexible event space that could be used for gallery space, commercial touring exhibitions (think immersive art style exhibitions such as Van Gough, exhibitions showcasing Derby Business (e.g. Rolls-Royce)
  • Dedicated co-working – this is a place for people to base themselves in the city centre- buy a coffee and use the Wi-Fi – it will be attractive to business people and students.  This space could also be used by community groups to have meetings and hold events.
  • An additional library focussed on families, children and young people – not a replacement for Riverside but an extension. It will have the ability to hold events that can’t be accommodated in the Riverside Library. We are looking at Storyhouse in Chester as a model and examples of what they do are weekly, including Rhymetime sessions for preschoolers on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Crafty Weekends on Saturdays and Sundays with themed crafts.
  • A rooftop bar and several food and beverage outlets
  • Three café bar restaurants on the ground floor – these will be commercial operations with a mix of national names and opportunities for local businesses.
